Want a New Source of Protein? Say PEAS.

It’s no secret that I’m a snacker.  I pack a little something in my purse every time I leave the house… you know, just in case 😉  Being that my diet is now gluten & soy-free, snack options have definitely dwindled a bit.  When I heard about LÄRABAR ALT bars, The Alternative Protein Bar™, I couldn’t help but show interest, especially being that they are SO allergy friendly!  When I’m packing snacks, I always look for something that’s nutritious and will tide me over until my next meal, which means it’s got to have either a decent protein punch or a bunch of fiber… ideally, both!

ALT®, the Alternative Protein Bar™, is the first-ever bar with added protein from LÄRABAR! Many bar brands use soy or whey protein, but ALT uses an alternative protein source: peas. Vegan, gluten free, dairy free, and non-GMO, ALT also uses a wrapper that is 31% renewable.

So, how do they taste?

Let’s start with my favorite of the bunch: Lemon Pound Cake

I don’t consider myself a HUGE lemon fan… which is why I surprised myself by reaching for this one first, given the choice.  The taste reminded me of Fruity Pebbles.  No joke.

lemoningredHow can you argue with such a simple and wholesome ingredients list?  10g of protein and 3g of fiber!  I also loved the texture of this one.  It had a bit of CRUNCH to it, rather than the chewy typical LÄRABARS.

My second favorite was a tie between the Peanut Butter Cookie & the Pumpkin Pie flavors

Before I became an OCD label checker and fitness/nutrition junkie, I had a soft spot for Subway‘s Peanut Butter Cookies… I can’t tell you the last time I’ve tried anything remotely close to that, but this tasted just like one, only with a tad more crunch factor.

stuffpbWith much better ingredients and nutritional information, too! Healthy fats from the almonds and peanuts, and a kick of protein from the peas (I promise, you can’t actually TASTE the peas).

Now, for the Pumpkin Pie

This bar was just as the website describes, “smooth and spicy with a rich pumpkin taste“.  I don’t think there’s been a pumpkin flavored anything that I haven’t been a fan of, to be completely honest.

pumpnutrAnd really, where are you going to find a slice of Pumpkin Pie that clocks in with these stats?  Although, admittedly, I’m surprised that there’s no Vitamin A in these bars considering canned pumpkin gives you a TON of it.  This bar is a little higher in sugar, but as with all ALT bars, the sugar comes strictly from whole foods like dates, pumpkin, and other fruit.

Last, but certainly not least, I give you Cinnamon Apple Crisp.

Let me just say, that this didn’t come in last because I didn’t like it… I guess I already felt like I would enjoy it because I’ve had the Apple Pie LÄRABAR before and enjoyed it.  It tastes just as you would imagine… like a cooled slice of apple pie!

applenutrI haven’t tried “preparing” one this way yet, because I ate mine en route, but I’d venture to guess that this baby would be delicious popped in the microwave for a few seconds to warm and topped with some vanilla frozen yogurt! Apple pie a la mode?!

Same fantastic nutritional profile (they’re all fairly similar).

A big thank you to LÄRABAR for sending me their new ALT bars for this review!  I thoroughly enjoyed each and every bite!  I will definitely be restocking on the Lemon Pound Cake!
